Lake, summer…

.

The lake of black water

looks bottomless

soft muck awaits

standing, sinking

clouds and settles,

greying the white

lining of swim suits.

Waves

only by boats

motoring by

the railroad trestle

swimmers

floating in inner tubes

children wading

walking in cricks to

water’s edge

balancing on water logs

slick

shining green

in the sun

minnows dart

in bright sandy shallows

lake gardens of lily pads

white and yellow floating

flowers,

rowboats

docks, boathouses

folding chairs

days ending in

bonfires and marshmallows

black flies

fireflies

screech owls

lake water black

as night.

.

.

Driveway, summer…

.

Grey stone

ruts

parallel

edged in privet

neighbors sunning

in chaise lounges

voices rising

basketball

hitting the court, hitting the court

anthills in silt along

all along

crouching

watching

ants

red

caps

struck by stones

Pop

jump ropes

twirling

two in the middle

hostas striped green

next to the house

Kool-aid

tricycles, bicycles

Converse sneakers

patent-leather sandals

scunned knees

hose

wash the car

in bathing suits.

Sublime evocations of summer Lily. I am overwhelmed. You are so in touch with your memories. I love it to pieces!!! x

  2. I feel as if I am there…at some point in time I probably was. Beautiful word work, Lily!

  3. These could be anyone’s summertime memories.
